Diaphragms, like all muscles, can become dysfunctional

Picture: After intense effort, especially after an abdominal workout, the diaphragm becomes achy and dysfunctional. It can no longer perform one of its key functions: squeezing the lower esophageal sphincter closed to prevent acid reflux and heartburn. This same diaphragm dysfunction happens to non-athletes, so stretching and massage are likely to help most people.
